Pen names and initials So I don't know if you've noticed or not, but a lot of authors use pen names or just have cool initials in their names. My name: Tim Routledge can be hard to pronounce. Inspiration and Motivation People often ask me where I get my inspiration from and what authors I look to for motivation. Well, I get my inspiration from things around me. My imagination is very vast. So vast, in fact, that it often even surprises myself! Where do I get ideas? From everything around me. From the way a person speaks, to a bird taking flight in the sky, to that old rustic car in that junkyard. Ideas come from everywhere. Even in the littlest of things - take everything you find interesting and write it down. Who are my favorite authors? J.K. Rowling, George R.R. Martin, Timothy Zahn, and Patrick Rothfuss. Why? They all tell great stories in the best way imaginable. A great story is all it takes to be successful in all honesty. Without Harry Potter's success, no one would know J.K. Rowling. Without Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin would be a nobody. A great story makes or breaks an author. The question that is hardest to ask, is my story a great story? This...

It's not easy. Get that thought of your head. Writing a book has several steps, several many forget about. These are things that I wish someone would have told me before going in head first. 1 - The Idea: So you have a great idea for a book? Write it down right away. Often times the best ideas are the ones we forget. So write it down somewhere, anywhere. On a gum wrapper, on your hand, a napkin, in your cell phone. Just write it down!  2 - Organizing: How long will the book be? What characters will you have in the book? It's smarter to do this before you start writing. I typically write all my notes before even starting the book. It's much more organized and everything is set up while you write the book.  3 - Starting: The first sentence is literally the hardest thing you'll ever write. From there on, it gets easier - trust me. But that first line, that's all you. Just remember, everyone struggles with the beginning.  4 - Writing: I don't know ...

People often wonder where they'll be in ten years. Ten years ago I would have never even thought about writing a book, let alone an entire series. I would have never thought about writing a screenplay nor working for a production company. Yet here I am. The path to our dreams is completely different for everyone, even if you have the same dream as another. Two people could begin at the same point and end up in different places all together. That's how life works. It throws you curve-balls. Sometimes those curve-balls are good - they lead you on to something better than you imagined. Sometimes they're set-backs, but you shouldn't look at those set-backs as a bad thing. People often tend to look at set-backs as failure or a misstep. But it's not, set-backs happen to test you - not to defeat you. They test your patience, your determination, and your strength. Set-backs should make you work harder, not give up all together.
